UN Security Council Unanimously Approves Resolution to Force Syria to Stop the Attacks

A resolution has been unanimously passed in the UN Security Council for forcing the Syrian government to immediately stop the attacks over the people. The resolution directs the government to open access to controlled areas for carrying out humanitarian activities. It literally warns for sheer consequences if not complied in letter and spirit.

It was for the first time since the inception of the issue that China and Russia had agreed on the resolution against the President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.  After a thorough discussion on this resolution, the certain demands of opposition fighters had also been listed in the resolution. The demands include opposition fighters should stop human rights and international law violations apart from demanding for government violators to be prosecuted in International Criminal Court.

Though Russia had intelligently declined the measure yet US administration said that it would do its utmost to get it implemented.  Secretary of State  Jhon. F. Kerry said that “The resolution is the dawn of hope for the Syrian crisis”.

The resolution is going to mount big pressure over the Syrian government.  The US Ambassador Samana Power said “A resolution is just words and we are taking the measure of implementation into account”. On the other hand, British Foreign Secretary William Hague warned the Syria for not abiding by the resolution. He said “If Assad regime fails to implement the resolution; we would not take time to go back to Security Council”.  He further said, the possible course of action would be military action that has been granted under the articles of UN Charter.

Moreover, the final version of this resolution does not contain the names of two militant organizations which have grossly supported the Syrian government – Hezbullah and Quds force.  But, the name of Al Qaeda has been clearly mentioned and all the active groups have been grossly criticized.

It is pertinent to note than more than 100,000 people have been brutally killed by the Syrian forces and the ratio of killings is speedily increasing with every passing day. The States blame each other for not solving the issue and most of the people hold the opinion that “Russia and China” are also equally responsible for the massacre.   Remember, Russia and China had vetoed the resolutions three times in the past three years.  On the other hand, the government did not allow any humanitarian organization for carrying out aid relief campaigns in the war torn country.

Hence, the approval of this resolution paints a brighter picture and it is presumed that if the resolution would not go vetoed, it would certainly force President of Syria to shut the attacks.
